Don’t Miss GFOA’s Annual Conference!

There’s only three months until GFOA’s 110th Annual Conference – Sharing Solutions and Strategies, May 22–25, in Toronto, Ontario. Here are three reasons why you should attend:

  • A rich array of concurrent sessions covering a broad range of topics to allow you to tailor your conference experience to your own needs and circumstances.

Scholarships for first-time attendees. Fifty scholarships will be awarded per state or province in the amount of the full-conference registration fee to first-time conference attendees who are GFOA active (government) members. To apply for a scholarship, e-mail First Annual Conference.

One-day rates. Can’t attend the full conference, or interested in sending your junior staff to participate? Take advantage of the one-day rate on May 23 or May 24. Download the registration form to complete and submit to the GFOA.

Travel information. All delegates traveling to Toronto from the United States will need a passport. Please plan ahead – obtaining a passport can take approximately 4-6 weeks. (Information on applying for or renewing a passport / Information for first-time passport application)

For U.S. citizens who are driving to Toronto to reenter the United States, you will need a U.S. passport, passport card, enhanced driver’s license, Trusted Traveler Program card (Nexus, Sentri, Fast), U.S. Military ID card (when on official orders), U.S. merchant mariner document (when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business), or form I-872 American Indian Card. State and Local Governments Lose Battle against Federal Preemption

Despite strong sustained opposition from GFOA and other groups representing local government, Senate leaders announced a legislative deal that would compromise local governments’ ability to deliver essential services to their communities. Senators dropped their objections to including the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act in the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act conference report (HR 644) and approved the legislation, in exchange for a commitment from Senate majority leadership to provide floor time for a discussion on the Marketplace Fairness Act (MFA) later this year. The move permanently removes local tax policy control on telecommunications services in exchange for mere consideration of MFA, with no guarantee as to the outcome.
