Complete List of CAFR Program Award Winners Available

Congratulations to the entities that have received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting in 2015 (for the fiscal year ended 2014 comprehensive annual financial reports, or CAFRs). The complete list of the winners has been posted on the GFOA website. We would also like to thank the reviewers in the CAFR Program for volunteering their time to review reports in 2015, and the list of the reviewers is also available.

The Deadline to Save on GFOA’s 110th Annual Conference is Approaching Quickly

Sign up by April 14 to save with an advance registration discount on GFOA’s 110th Annual Conference, May 22-25, 2016, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. View this year’s sessions and earn additional CPE credits by registering for GFOA’s preconference seminars.

First-time annual conference attendee scholarships are available for GFOA active government members who have never attended a conference. E-mail First Annual Conference for details and an application.

If you can’t attend the entire conference, register with a special one-day rate on either Monday, May 23, or Tuesday, May 24. You will have access to all conference sessions, meetings, luncheons, and exhibits held on that date. This is also a great way to train junior staff in your organization and save on travel expenses.

Small City Operates Entirely on Solar Power

The City of North Adams, Massachusetts, now powers its municipal buildings and infrastructure – including City Hall, the library, schools, street lights and a public skating rink – using only solar power, according to iBerkshires (via CitiScope).

A Smart Approach to Downtown Waste Management

In an effort to keep streets cleaner and encourage more recycling, the City of Birmingham, England, worked with a third party to install smart trash bins in the city center. The larger bins allow the city to reduce the number of trash collections needed by 64%, and the bins’ sensor technology alerts the city when the bin is full, as well as monitoring peak times and places for litter, which allows officials to target resources and maximize recycling efforts.
